Introduction to RBI
Risk based inspection (RBI) is a method / procedure engaged predominantly for Maintenance activities in Chemicals / continuous process / fertilizer / Oil & gas / metals / pharmaceuticals / cement industries sector. In comparison to conventional regular interval based inspection program, here the plant assets / equipments are identified for associated risks involved based on criticality of operational and EHS aspects.
What is RBI
In Risk based inspection approach, the risks involved with plant equipments, structure are identified, assessed and categorized in various risk categories. With help of analysis / quantification of probability and consequences of failure for equipment / system, appropriate inspection and maintenance planning is determined for implementation.
Importance of RBI
RBI is becoming very important tool in recent times for Asset optimization in terms of operations and maintenance of industrial sector complex e.g. chemicals / continuous process / fertilizer / Oil & gas / metals / pharmaceuticals / cement etc. RBI accelerates meeting economic and reliability requisites in line with regulatory obligations with advancement in plants’ efficiency and monetary performance, availability along with environment, health & safety aspects. It also helps pushing the life and condition of plant / complex by putting long term inspection and testing procedure in practice. RBI is one of the major components of Asset Integrity Management and Optimization. We will see the details of Asset Integrity Optimization Management in next topic of discussion.
Risk Evaluation criteria based on Probability and Consequences of Failure
Risk ranking for different probability and consequences of failures can be done as in matrix below.
